Local residents and AMA community were also encouraged to to show support by joining us in ‘Light a candle’ movement. Petition Cards were signed up on the day as well as online petitions. Melton City Council, along with passionate residents, community groups and health professionals launched the Build Melton Hospital campaign, 100 days out from the Victorian State Election on Saturday 24 November. The City of Melton is asking the State Government, Opposition and minor parties to commit to building a 24-hour, full-service hospital in the suburb of Cobblebank, 4 kms southeast of central Melton, south of the Western Freeway and close to the future Toolern train station on the Melton line. A full-service, 24-hour hospital typically includes services such as an emergency department, cardiac and intensive care, acute surgical facilities and diagnostic services. Cr Turner said the hospital would create hundreds of jobs during construction and many upon opening, including hundreds of doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, support and administrative staff. "It’s time for Spring Street to Invest in the West and Build Melton Hospital."
Project Dingoes
The dingo (Cains dingo) is an iconic Australian native animal which is loved by a huge majority of the populace. Recently, there has been a marked shift in the public and scientific communities’ attitude toward the role and protection of dingoes in Australia. This is because their crucial function in the Australian ecosystem (as top order predators), and their regulation and suppression of many species such as kangaroos, rabbits, foxes and cats, naturally promotes ecosystem balance. This has now been officially recognised. Unfortunately, the dingo has suffered the same fate as the grey wolf (Canis lupus) by coming into conflict with graziers, and becoming a convenient scapegoat for profit losses. It’s a cultural issue, where the fear of what may be possible is more real than what does, or is likely to occur. Dingoes have faced ongoing cultural persecution via bounty hunts, trapping and 1080 baiting. Consequently, they are under severe threat of eradication, particularly along the south-eastern seaboard of Australia, where agricultural and urban developments dominate. Dingoes are currently considered threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), but it has been largely left up to sanctuaries, such as ADF (Australian Dingo Foundation), to fight for the protection and future of the dingo. In order to bring relief and a glimmer of hope to the survival of a species that if left alone, would thrive, AMA, supported the Australian Dingo Foundation to fight Dingo Extinction and also raise awareness amongst the migrant communities.
